Course contents: 20 lessons Spanish and approx. 10-12 h wine and culture

In the morning
In the morning 4 Spanish lessons Spanish according to the students’ level of Spanish.

Topic: Wine, visit to winery
  • Short introduction about wine, history, D.O. Toro
  • Visit to winery, explanations of the wine making process and wine tasting.

Tuesday afternoon:
Topic: History of Toro, visit of the Colegiata
  • History and culture of Toro Towards the 15th century Toro played an important role in the kingdom of the “Catholic kings”. It was Royal Court. The famous 83 laws of Toro, 1505, laid the basis for the construction of Spain, the “oldest” country in Europe. year 1505. Famous historic personalities like Christopher Columbus or Amerigo Vespucci stayed in Toro.
  • Visit to the Colegiata. Explaining the “Portico de la Gloria” a work of art, declared as world cultural heritage.

Wednesday afternoon:
Topic: Visit to the Royal Monastery “Sancti Spiritus” (15th century)
  • Visit with historical explanations to the monastery Sancti Spiritus. The monastery is the most important monastery museum in the province. A jewel with extraordinary art and rooms where a spiritual atmosphere and peace are “present”. Still today the nuns back sweets according to old recipes which are sold successfully throughout Spain.

Topic: Wine tasting
  • Wine tasting with professional explanations to the varieties of grape, wine making, the different classes of wine (Roble, Crianza, Reserva..) etc.. An interesting afternoon for everyone who likes to know about wine.

Friday afternoon:
No activities

Friday evening
Traditional “good-bye dinner” in a typical restaurant, this is not included in the course fee.

Further possibilities for the culture part, according to participants’ interests:
  • Visit of a sheep cheese enterprise
  • Visit of a traditional chocolate enterprise
  • Visit of an old bodega from the 15th Century
  • "Tapas-tour"
  • "Cocido" (chickpea dish)

Program modifications are at any time possible.

Bullfight Arena

On July 2010 the old bullfight arena was inaugurated solemnly in Toro. After several years of costly renovations, in which old craft techniques were applied, the wooden building is there in all its splendour. The building dated from 1828, it is the second-oldest bullring in Spain. It is testimony to a glorious bygone era of the small town on the Duero river, as it was still provincial capital, where many noble families lived.
