On this page we have put together some information so that you can arrange your language stay and your leisure time as varied and as optimal as possible. We are happy to help you in case of questions.

Sports for a change
A healthy mind in a healthy body. As a contrast to learning there are plenty of sports activities on offer:
  • Swimming
    In the public swimming pool during the summer and form Spring 2008 in the public indoor swimming pool
  • Tennis, Padel
    The town has public sports facilities which can be rented.
  • Biking
    The pine groves, the vineyards, the shore of the Douro River and the miles long fields of wheat are made for this kind of sport.
  • Walking/going
    Many natives practise it in the afternoon and evening, just around the corner and in nearby surroundings of Toro.
  • Health clubs
    Several health clubs offer an extensive range of activities. Our students can profit from this even if it’s only for one week.
  • Golf
    The nearest 9 hole is golf course is approx. 25 km away from Toro.
  • Football/basketball
    There are several clubs and teams. We have the contacts so that you can take part in the training sessions and get to know new people so.

Something for the mind and the muse

  • Painting
    Chonchi Rodrigues, a well-known local painter, has a workshop with a painting school. Chonchi leads you into the world of painting and you get to know different techniques .- let you be creative.
  • Music
    If you play a musical instrument, take it along and you can practise with the local town band and establish so many new contacts with natives.
  • Local library
    The local library is located in arts centre, a palace from the 15th century. Read newspapers, current magazines or books in a special atmosphere or watch films in the video library.

Toro has a little but very beautiful theatre from the 19th century. Theatre plays and concerts. Ask us what’s on when you are in Toro.

Out into nature
Discover the unspoilt nature in the immediate vicinity. Some examples:
  • The bird sanctuary of Lagunas de Villafavila, an important resting place for migratory birds.
  • The nature park of Lago de Sanabria, the only glacial lake in the Iberian Peninsula. Crystal-clear water.
  • “Los Arribes del Duero”: the magnificent gorge of the Douro River, known as the grand canyon of the Iberian peninsula - best seen by boat.
The nearest cities.
Not far from Toro there are three interesting cities well worth a visit.
  • Zamora, the centre of Romanesque architecture in Spain.
  • Salamanca, nown as the “Golden City”, World Heritage Site, the history and architecture of this city fascinate every visitor.
  • Valladolid, the capital city of Castilla y León offers a nice old quarter with many museums.
These cities can easily be reached by public bus.

Bullfight Arena

On July 2010 the old bullfight arena was inaugurated solemnly in Toro. After several years of costly renovations, in which old craft techniques were applied, the wooden building is there in all its splendour. The building dated from 1828, it is the second-oldest bullring in Spain. It is testimony to a glorious bygone era of the small town on the Duero river, as it was still provincial capital, where many noble families lived.
